Management Plan

Management Plan Front Cover PartialManagement Plan Front Cover Partial

The Management Plan for the National Park was approved in June 2012. The Plan, which was subject to ongoing consultation and discussion as part of its production, represents the broad agreement of residents, businesses and local and national organisations as to how the National Park will be managed over the next 15 years.

The Plan considers what benefits the National Park can provide to meet the needs of society and responds to current issues such as the need to produce more food, improve health and well being and adapt to the effects of a changing climate. Continuing to enhance the landscape, natural environment and cultural heritage of the Park is nevertheless central to the Plan's aims which include strengthening the Park's habitat networks and conserving its important buildings and monuments.

The Plan is for the Park, not just for the Authority, and it is therefore crucial that local and national organisations, businesses and residents all sign up to show their support and commitment to delivering its aims. Over 100 organisations and individuals signed up to the Management Plan when it was launched in November 2012, including the following:

  • Butterfly Conservation
  • Campaign for National Parks
  • DEFRA
  • English National Park Authorities Association

Plan Review 2016

Although the Plan covers a 15 year period, the Authority takes the opportunity to review it every five years which allows account to be taken of any changes in circumstances, pressures or opportunities facing the National Park. Over the Autumn of 2016 we undertook a “light touch refresh” of the 2012 plan. This was because we considered the plan very much still fit for purpose due to its major revision in 2012, its comprehensive and innovative nature and the widespread support and contributions it received from partner organisations during its preparation.

A series of minor amendments were agreed by the National Park Authority in December 2016 following consultation with stakeholders. An amendment sheet listing these changes has been produced and is available using the link above. A copy of the revised plan will be available in due course.
