Profile - Leslie Atkinson

I started my working life as an apprentice coach builder after 2 years National Service in the Royal Navy serving 18 months abroad.  I arrived at Scarborough in 1970 for work at Plaxtons Coachbuilders – no qualifications, no politics, no religion, no money and stayed for 25 years and finally retired as an Area Manager. I have lived in the National Park at Stoupe Brow on the coast for 35 years. My wife was a teacher at Whitby and I have 2 sons, 2 daughters and 8 grandchildren.

I joined the NYM’s Rescue Team in 1971 and I am a founder member of Yorkshire Coast group of the Long Distance Walkers Association and the originator of the “Smugglers Trod”, a 26 mile challenge walk from Robin Hoods Bay. I have a gold certificate for national navigation. I am also Footpath Secretary for the Scarborough group of the Ramblers Association, I also organise a volunteer work party in conjunction with the NYMNP rangers. I lead 6 mile walks on week days and 10 mile walks on Sundays as and when required. I help NYMNPA with the surveying of footpaths, having walked 90% of all RoW in the National Park I know my way around very well.  I am a member of the NYCC local Access Forum and for the last 3 years I have been a member of the BBC Trust based in Leeds.  I am also a member of the Youth Hostel Association and Fylingdales Parish Council.  The National Park must not be allowed to become empty and sterile.  Work and play need to go hand in hand, if the National Park is to progress.  We need low cost homes and more jobs to encourage young people to stay and live and work in the Park.

Favourite place

The view from my front door, which is fabulous. Lealholm for a great walk in any direction.
