SeashTreat seashore creatures carefullyore Habitat Study

An opportunity for children to gain first hand experience of a coastal environment. After a simple introduction to the geography and geology of the coastline and coastal defences, we focus on tides and the seashore as a habitat. Children explore rock pools and we identify and discuss the adaptations of plants and animals found.

Main curriculum links:

  • Science – life processes, identification, variation and classification, food chains, describing rocks, effect of sun, and moon on tides
  • Geography – how and why people seek to manage environments sustainably

Every Child Matters: Physical exercise outdoors, enhanced enjoyment through inspiring activities, achieving through a range of learning styles, developing a sense of respect and care for the environment.

Age Range: Years 4 to 6 (age 8 to 11)

Rocks and Fossils

AmmoniteThis indoor activity can be delivered in local schools or at youth hostels / hotels where schools are staying on residential trips. Investigate the real Jurassic Park and use rocks and fossils to discover what the North York Moors was like up to 180 million years ago!  This indoor session is divided into four short 'hands on' activities and includes investigating the rocks that form local coastal cliffs, identifying rock specimens, using a key to identify fossils and matching specimens of glacial erratics with descriptions to show where the glaciers came from during the last ice age.

  • Science - describing, identifying and grouping rocks, identifying fossilised plants and animals using a key
  • Geography - explaining why a place is like it is in terms of geology

Age Range: Years 5 and 6 (Age 9 to 11)

Duration: Quarter day (up to an hour and a half)
