Boltby Scar Excavation

Archaeologists are currently excavating an important Iron Age site at Boltby Scar hillfort in the south west of the National Park.

As part of the Lime and Ice Project, Dominic Powlesland and his team are working on the site in the hope of finding out about the hillfort’s original construction, its subsequent defensive uses and its relationship to other features in the wider landscape.

The area around Sutton Bank was an important site for Iron Age man. As well as Boltby Scar hillfort, there is a second hillfort at Roulston Scar and defensive earthworks.
