Building materials

Many houses and other buildings in the National Park were built at least 200 years ago. These traditional buildings are usually made out of stone found in the local area.
In the north of the Park, many houses are built out of sandstone.
In the south of the Park many are built out of limestone.

They usually have small windows and roofs made out of red tiles called clay pantiles.
These stone cottages are very pretty and the villages in the North York Moors are popular places for tourists to visit.
