Changing rights of way

Public rights of way can be diverted by a legal process if it seems expedient to do so and if it can be done without inconveniencing the public. The procedure is not simple and can take several months. The cost is usually paid by the landowner, unless there is a significant public benefit, in which case the Authority may be able to take on part of the cost.

The procedure is explained in a booklet which you can download from the Natural England website.

If you are considering diverting a public footpath or bridleway, please contact the Rights of Way Officer for your area by emailing paths@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk or telephone 01439 770657, or write to the North York Moors National Park Authority, The Old Vicarage, Bondgate, Helmsley, YO62 5BP.
