Coastal Plateau

Farmland - Coastal (Photo by Andy Elliott)On the relatively flat and fertile boulder clay plateau between the moors and the North Sea, the farmland is quite intensively managed for arable and dairy farms. Only the steeper hillsides remain unaffected by modern agriculture.

The plateau farmland is dissected by small becks running off the moors, through steep-sided wooded valleys, straight out to the North Sea.

The harsh coastal environment becomes more evident as you come closer to the sea. Hedges not walls form the predominant field boundaries here and windswept bushes and trees stuggle to survive.
