Design Awards Scheme 2010

Design AwardsThe Design Awards were developed to recognise and celebrate developments that add to the richness of the North York Moors’ built heritage. The winners received a specially commissioned plaque and certificate at a presentation held at the Authority’s headquarters in Helmsley.

In selecting the winning entries the judging panel considered a number of design issues including the quality of detail and innovation, the materials used and the execution of workmanship of each
scheme.

And the Winners were ...

Design AwardsBest new dwelling:
The former chapel at Dunsley - converted into an open plan; four-bedroom house which the judges felt had been achieved through minimal physical alterations to the external fabric of the building, which combined with careful detailing, demonstrated an excellent mix of conservation and innovation in design.

Design AwardsBest non-residential development:
Lythe Village Hall - for changes to improve access to and use of the building. The judges felt that the scheme had successfully tackled a number of previously poor quality extensions through the provision of modest, well executed additions – including a new oak and glazed entrance porch and extended kitchen, all of which greatly enhanced the usability of the building for the local community.

Design AwardsBest new extension:
Susannah Hill Cottage, Ravenscar, which was described as an innovative yet sympathetic extension to a modest and vernacular building supported by the effective use of soft and hard landscaping.

Design AwardsJudges special award:
The Cabin, Runswick Bay for its quality of detailing and workmanship which the judges felt contributed to the visual diversity of Runswick Bay.

The Judging Panel included:

• John Fletcher (Chair of the National Park Authority)
• Jim Bailey (Chair of Planning Committee)
• Martha Maguire (Architect – Wiles & Maguire, York)
• Gareth Fawcett (North York Moors Association)

The Authority would like to thank all those who submitted entries to the scheme and look forward to receiving more high quality applications as part of the 2012 Design Awards.
