North York Moors National Park

Planning

Enforcement

The planning system was introduced so that development could be controlled for the public good and to safeguard the amenity of others. Enforcing planning control is vital to conserving the quality of the landscape and buildings in the National Park.

Most people stick to the rules – applying for planning permission when needed and ensuring that they follow any conditions attached to their planning permission. However, there are instances where people either deliberately or inadvertently flout planning controls by starting an activity or development without planning permission. This can lead to a nuisance to others or result in development and buildings that spoil the character of the National Park.

An Enforcement Charter has been published to explain how the Authority will deal with enforcement complaints and what you can do if you are concerned that a development is proceeding either without planning permission or not in accordance with a consent that has already been granted. Complaints can be submitted in writing, by telephone, e mail or using the online form.

If you have any further queries about planning enforcement please contact us or telephone Peter Jones, Senior Planning Officer (Enforcement), Andrew Muir, Senior Planning Officer (Enforcement) or Julie Cavanagh, Monitoring Officer on 01439 770657.
