Dark Skies Astro Photography Workshop with Robert Ince at Sutton Bank National Park Centre (Friday 16 February 7pm – 10pm) SOLD OUT

Learn how to photograph the contrast of our dark skies and the beautiful stars above and howto create beautiful star trails and other compositions that will leave you and your friends breathless, all with just a DSLR camera, lens and tripod. Includes an introduction to the techniques of processing astrophotographs to enhance the faint detail. By using tracking mounts with camera lenses and small telescopes, you will realise that you can take pictures you never thought possible! After some time spent in the workshop, there will be opportunities (weather permitting) to try the astrophotography techniques out under our dark skies. Suitable for adults and accompanied children 16 years and over.

Special notes: Wrap up warm as it can get very cold on a night and bring a torch. Hot drinks will also be available to keep you warm. Feel free to bring along your own camera equipment, ideally a DSLR with a tripod and a wide angle lens.

Kane Cunningham interviews artist Peter Hicks and photographer Joe Cornish, about finding their artistic identity and inspiration.

Creations in Willow with Willow Expert Anthea Firth

Willow expert, Anthea Firth, is leading five special willow workshops this year at The Moors Centre. The workshops are aimed at beginners as well as those with some experience of the craft. You'll learn the core techniques required for willow working as well as the specific skills needed to create your willow creation. Please wear comfortable casual clothes and bring a packed lunch. Materials and tools provided. Learn how to make:

  • Easter bunny or hare (Saturday 10 March 10am – 3pm; £45 including materials).
  • Goose (Saturday 20 October 10am – 3pm; £50 including materials)
  • Alternative 'Christmas tree' (Saturday 27 October 10am – 3pm; £50 including materials)
  • Large garden deer (Sunday 11 November 10am – 3pm; £45 including materials)
  • Stag's head (Saturday 1 December 10am – 3pm; £45 including materials)
  • Spheres, stars and rings (Sunday 9 December 10am – 3pm; £45 including materials)

Paint with James McGairy (22 April, 10 June, 30 September, 21 October 10.30am – 4.30pm)

Small-group workshops focusing on acrylic paint, a forgiving medium for beginners and more experienced artist alike. James will demonstrate his methods and you’ll leave at the end of the day with your own painting. Minimum age 14 but must be accompanied by an adult.

John Shave will introduce you to modern Impressionistic techniques, including composition, tonal contrast, brush techniques and colour mixes. Everyone should go home with a finished painting. Minimum age: 18

Watercolour and Acrylic Inks (Monday 28 May 10am – 4pm)

Sue Williams’ workshop explores the use of watercolours and acrylic inks. Ink, salt, clingfilm, twigs, palettes and some paints are provided, but please bring your own watercolour sketchbook, brushes, water pot, pencil, watercolour paints and paper towels. Minimum age: 18

Working in watercolour (4-week indoor course, Tuesdays 5, 12, 19 and 26 June 6.30pm – 8.30pm) at Sutton Bank National Park Centre

Learn the watercolour techniques required to paint the dramatic landscapes and features of the North York Moors. This is a 4-week indoor course – suitable for both beginners and more experienced painters – led by artist Peter Reynolds. Minimum age: 18

Printing with Stencils Workshop (Saturday 9 June; half-day workshop with sessions at 10.30am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm – 4pm)

Textile artist and printmaker Gill Kirk leads a half day workshop showing how paper-cut stencils link up to create layers of shapes and
images. Minimum age 16 but must be accompanied by an adult.

Intaglio Printmaking Workshop (Sunday 10 June 10am – 4pm)

Textile artist and printmaker Gill Kirk shows you how to carve lines on acrylic sheets using an etching needle, before inking them and printing on an etching press. No experience required. Minimum age 14 but must be accompanied by an adult.

Silk Art Workshop (Saturday 30 June, Saturday 7 July 10.30am – 4.30pm)

Jane Carlisle Bellerby's one-day course is an ideal introduction to silk painting and mark-making techniques, using iron-fix paints to create effects on silk through various methods including salting, twisting, printing by lamplight, rubbings and stitch. All materials included, but please bring your own apron. Minimum age: 18

Coffee with the Artists (Friday 13 July 10.30am – 11.30am)

Join artists Sara Dudman and Jenny Graham  in an informal chat about their work. See their work in the  Northern Territories exhibition 21 June - 16 July.

Mixed Media Art Workshop (Saturday 14 July 10am – 4pm)

Create atmospheric landscape paintings, working with paint, ink and collage. Workshop led by Jenny Graham, and suitable for

Acrylic Painting Workshop (Sunday 15 July 10am – 4pm)

Working directly from sheep that have been filmed on the moors, Sara Dudman leads an acrylic painting workshop that offers the opportunity to express movement and behaviour. Everyone will take home an acrylic painting on canvas (plus stretchers). Minimum age 14 but must be accompanied by an adult.

Machine Embroidery Workshop (Saturday 21 July and Sunday 22 July 10am – 4pm)

Free-motion machine embroidery with Gill Kirk – learn how to applique, bond, machine-embroider and hand-stitch your way to beautiful pieces of work - with the themes 'Flowers in a Vase' (Saturday) and 'Create a Landscape' (Sunday). This workshop requires participants to bring their own sewing machine with darning foot. Minimum age 16 but must be accompanied by an adult.

Watercolourist Jake Jones will be in the gallery demonstrating his work and answering any questions about his practice. Free admission.

Christmas Craft Fair (Saturday 17 – Sunday 18 November 10.30am – 4pm)

Complementing Brigantia's artists and craftmakers, who will be exhibiting in the Inspired by... gallery (16 November until 20 January 2019), our popular annual Christmas Craft Fair returns. Celebrating the very best of contemporary and traditional local arts, craftmakers and seasonal gifts, from jewellery, ceramics and textiles, to natural skincare, artisan gin, fudge and handmade chocolates, there'll be hundreds of gifts to suit every purse. As well as the wide-ranging goods on the stalls, seasonal gifts will be on sale in the Centre’s shop. Meet the makers and pick up a unique gift. 

There’s also a visit from Santa in his ‘winter woodland’ workshop, traditional music, children’s craft-making activities and storytelling. When you need a rest from all the hustle and bustle, why not visit The Woolly Sheep café, and enjoy a mince pie or two to revive your spirits!
