Grow your own tree
Growing your own tree is fun, and is a simple way that you can make a difference to the environment.
Why not have a go?
Just follow the suggestions below and you could soon be growing a tree that could live for hundreds of years!
Collect a seed from a native tree.
(Native trees are those which have grown naturally in Britain for several thousand years, such as oak, silver birch, ash, beech, holly, rowan.)
Plant it in a pot in soil or peat free compost.
(Peat is taken from special bogs which are a very important and rare habitat for wildlife. When you buy compost, check the label to make sure it is a peat free alternative, this way, you help the environment even more!).
Leave it outside over winter where it won’t get eaten.
Remember to water it and wait and see if it grows.
When your tree is 2 years old it can be planted in the ground. If you don’t have anywhere suitable, try and bring it to one of the special planting sites in the National Park.
