How can I help to look after historical remains?
If something is already 1000 years old or more, help us to make sure it will still be here when your great, great (x 30) grand children come and visit in 1000 year's time!
Historical sites are often fascinating places to visit but remember that they are very special places and can easily be damaged. Many sites are so special they are protected by law. This means they must not be disturbed or damaged in any way.
Avoid climbing on walls, you could easily damage them – and yourself!
Take your litter home and recycle it.
Keep to the paths around special sites. Sometimes special pathways have been built around archaeological sites, like the trail at Cawthorn Camps near Pickering. Visitors are welcome to come and learn about the site but should keep to these paths. If you don’t, your trainers could be trampling on an important and rare piece of history that can’t be replaced.
Go to a village festival or show. You may see something that people have been doing for hundreds of years such as traditional crafts or music or story telling. Carrying on these old traditions helps us learn about life in the past.
