How can I help to look after moorland?

 

Try to buy products grown or produced locally. This helps the farmers who look after the moorland. Look for local lamb, wool and heather honey.

Keep to the paths on moorland walksRemember, heather looks tough but trampling on it damages the plant and wears away the soil. You can avoid damaging heather by keeping to footpaths and bridleways.

Keep an eye out for nesting birds in the spring. The nests are on the ground and well camouflaged or hidden. Keep your dog on a lead and take care not to step on a nest.

Never start a fire on the moorsNever start a fire on the moor. Fires spread very quickly. They can damage the soil and harm wildlife. Wait until you are safely home for your barbecue.

Look after yourself. The weather changes quickly on the high moors. Make sure you have warm and waterproof clothes learn to use a map and compass.

If you are lucky and see some wildlife, avoid disturbing it by being quiet and keeping your distance. Look and listen for grouse and curlew and keep an eye on the ground for adders.
