How can I help to look after the coast?
There are many things that you can do to help care for the coast:
Look after wildlife
- Look after wildlife - the plants and animals in rock pools are very delicate and easily damaged. If you turn over a rock, always replace it exactly as it was. Always leave seashore creatures in their home as they will die away from their habitat. Click here to find out more about coastal wildlife.
- Remember the cliffs are where many sea birds nest. As with all nesting birds, avoid disturbing them – even if they are very noisy!
- Take your litter home, it looks horrible on the beach and is a danger to other people and to wildlife.
Help local people
- Visiting hotels, shops and cafes helps local people to make a living.
- If you want to buy a souvenir, look for locally produced crafts in the shops.
Look after yourself
- Seaweed and rocks can be very slippery – take care!
- Wash your hands when you leave the beach or before you eat anything.
- Keep well away from the top and bottom of cliffs – landslides and falling rocks are common.
- Ask in local shops about the tide times and be very careful not to get stuck on the beach as the tide comes in.
