How can I help to look after the rivers?

There are many ways that you can help look after our rivers.
Try to use less water - the water that comes out of your taps is taken from rivers and reservoirs and has to be treated to make it safe to drink. Think about how you could use less water in your house. Here are some ideas.
- Make sure you turn taps off– a dripping tap can waste up to 30 litres of water every day; enough for a 5 minute shower!
- Don’t leave the tap running when you clean your teeth or you could waste 10 litres a day.
- Take a shower and save two-thirds of the water needed for a bath.
- Collect rain water in a water butt to water your garden.
Take your litter home - avoid throwing rubbish into rivers. Litter is very dangerous to freshwater creatures who could get trapped in it and drown. Recycling it is much better for everyone!
Keep to footpaths - remember the land through which rivers flow is usually privately owned. Take notice of signs that tell you where you can and can't go in the countryside.
Stay safe - take an adult with you and remember that although the water may look very tempting, rivers often have places where the water is deep and fast and dangerous. It is much safer to stay on the bank.
