International recognition

 

44,000 hectares of the moorland have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the heathland habitat and breeding birds.

Moorland BogThe area has also been included in the European Natura 2000 series of sites, confirming the area as an internationally important site for merlin, golden plover, heathland and bog.
