This Exploited Land of Iron offers some fantastic opportunities to explore and learn more about the North York Moors and its industrial past. As part of the project we will be developing a range of interpretation and educational materials that will be located out on site and available online through this website.

We anticipate having the first products ready in summer 2017 so watch this space.

Ideas being worked on include:

Walks in the Land of Iron

Updated versions of the popular Grosmont-Goathland Rail Trail and Walks around Rosedale Abbey booklets, plus new walks taking in the best of the ironstone heritage features. Possible Ironstone Way walk and cycle ride and Ironstone Trail Marathon.

Industry at The Moors Centre National Park Centre, Danby

A major refurbishment and remodelling of the exhibition space at The Moors National Park Centre including dedicated Story of the Land of Iron exhibition with interactive displays and outdoor children’s play facilities. Also themed exhibitions in the Inspired by… Gallery, starting with “An Exploited Landscape in Transition” from photographer and writer Ian Macdonald between 18 March and 10 April 2017.

Grosmont and Rosedale Interpretation Hubs

Mini-exhibition spaces in the heart of the Land of Iron area with tasters of the main interpretation and more locally-based guides to these areas.

Land of Iron on the go

A mobile display unit and support vehicle for use at community events and volunteer days to take the story to the people. This can also be used to support volunteer activities at community archaeology events and practical conservation and land management tasks.
