Modern apprenticeship scheme

Modern Apprentices working on bridge workThis exciting new Scheme gives eight local youngsters a fantastic grounding in countryside management.

The apprentices, aged between 16 and 24 years old, are paid a training allowance and undertake an apprenticeship for 15 to 30 months. They spend most of their time learning practical skills working alongside experienced people in the outdoor environments of the North York Moors.

Classroom based learning, provided by Askham Bryan College, complements the practical skills picked up in the field. Candidates are also offered NVQ training in environmental conservation, providing a framework to put the practical work in perspective.

A successful applicant will get:

  • An NVQ qulification in Environmental Conservation
  • Certificates in a range of useful skills such as strimmer and chainsaw use and first aid
  • A modern apprenticeship
  • Practical skills in countryside management such as drystone walling, fencing, hedge laying
  • Memories of a wonderful time working with the National Park Ranger and Field Services
  • A great chance to work in a rewarding job

All of our first team of apprentices are now using their skills in full time employment except one who is studying for a degree in Countryside Management

The North York Moors needs sensitive management which in turn requires traditional skills like hedge laying, drystone walling, path maintenance and tree planting. These skills are in short supply and this initiative is a real step forward in matching local skills to local needs.

Any vacancies for Apprentices will be advertised on our Jobs pages.
