Moorland Field Studies
Moorland Management and Assessing the Impact of Footpath Erosion
This session includes an introductory presentation (up to an hour) which can be done on the day at The Moors Centre or before the field visit in school. It focuses on why moorland is valuable to people, how and why it is managed, threats to the moorland environment and examples of how the National Park Authority is working to alleviate these threats.
The practical field survey involves students carrying out interupted belt transects across a path on the moor. They work in groups and record vegetation type and percentage cover using quadrats and then measure soil pH, depth, colour, texture and compaction.
Optional follow up teachers' pack: includes photos and information about a badly eroded footpath and different techniques and materials used for repair. STudents can use the information provided to discuss and recommend the most appropriate solution. The 'real life' solution can then be presented and explained.

The Burning Question!
Moorland Management and Assessing the Impact of Heather Burning
This activity includes the presentation described in the footpath activity above.
The practical field survey involves students working in groups to collect datat on heather plants in areas which have been burnt at different times. Techniques include random sampling, use of quadrats, estimation of percentage cover and measurement of plant height.
Optional follow up teachers' pack: includes an Excel spreadsheet for collating data and guidance on using statistical tests to analyse results.
