Need to know

HobThere's so much to see and do in the North York Moors that it helps to have some basic information at your fingertips so you can make the most of a visit here.

We hope these pages will answer many of the questions you have when planning a trip but if there's anything we've missed, please email us so we can help you and also improve the website.

The North York Moors National Park is a wonderful place which we can all help to protect, as well as enjoy. Thinking ‘Green’ and doing your bit can really make a difference.

Although it is a National Park, most of the land is still in private ownership. The 1400 mile (almost 2300km) network of footpaths and bridleways gives access to much of the area, and now over 90 square miles of open moorland can also be explored on foot as it is open access land. There are, of course, responsibilities which come with these rights. The ‘Moors Message’ shows some of the ways we can all help.

By respecting the different pace of life here we all benefit. So take your time, find out about the area, enjoy its special qualities. And leave it a place which future generations will also want to enjoy.
