Flooding

Sinnington by Richard BurdonSinnington by Richard Burdon

All planning authorities are required to produce a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA).

The North York Moors National Park Authority, Ryedale District Council and Scarborough Borough Council jointly commissioned Arup to undertake an SFRA for their areas, known for the purpose of this SFRA as North-east Yorkshire. This was originally published in 2006 and updated in 2010.

The purpose of the SFRA is to inform policies in the Local Development Framework and to provide further guidance for the consideration of planning applications.

The Environment Agency publishes flood risk maps which are used by the Authority to determine whether a development is likely to be at risk from flooding. The SFRA uses these maps as a basis and supplements this with further information on past flooding events obtained as part of the SFRA process.
