Minerals Safeguarding Areas

Wood anemoneWood anemone

As minerals planning authority, the National Park Authority is required to define Minerals Safeguarding Areas. These enable the presence of the resource to be taken into account when determining planning applications with the aim of avoiding the sterilisation of resources. Minerals Safeguarding Areas do not add any weight in favour of minerals extraction in these areas. British Geological Survey has produced a report containing recommendations relating to areas to be safeguarded in the National Park. This can be viewed here. The policy approach to be applied in these areas is to be determined through the Minerals and Waste Joint Plan.
