Roadside verges

Most of us pass roadside verges everyday without giving them much thought but did you know that they are important havens for wildlife?

Many roadside verges are remnants of old grasslands and woodlands and still support some of the species that once thrived there – including those that have vanished elsewhere in our countryside. A well managed verge can provide a colourful display of native wildflowers and homes for wildlife.

The National Park Authority is working with highways staff, Parish Councils and individuals to help protect important roadside verges. We can provide help and advice to enable you to care for them. Managing verges in the correct way can make a big difference. Cutting verges in full flower, not cutting them at all or making them too neat and tidy can reduce their value as wildlife havens.

What can YOU do to help?

Parish Councils can help care for roadside verges by:

  • Mapping and surveying verges to help highlight the most valuable ones for wildlife
  • Seeking advice about how to care for the best verges in your area
  • Managing verges e.g. by making hay or trimming bushes

If you are an individual you can help by:

  • Becoming a volunteer and helping the National Park Authority survey and care for roadside verges
  • Informing the Authority about important verges near where you live
  • Encouraging your Parish Council to help care for important verges
