Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Spatial Strategy requires all planning authorities in the region to produce a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA). The purpose of this is to inform the production of the Local Government Framework and to provide further guidance for the consideration of planning applications.

The North York Moors National Park Authority, Ryedale District Council and Scarborough Borough Council jointly commissioned Arup to undertake an SFRA for their areas, known for the purpose of this SFRA as Northeast Yorkshire.

The Environment Agency already publishes flood risk maps which are used by the Authority to determine whether a development is likely to be at risk from flooding. The SFRA uses these maps as a basis and supplements this with further information on past flooding events obtained as part of the SFRA process. This information is used to advise on the processes and considerations the Authority should go through in both developing flood risk policy and considering planning applications.
