Small Scale Enhancements Scheme Supported Projects
Rosedale East Pond
The excavation and restoration of an old pond which is belived to be at least 100 years old. As part of the work an archaeological consultant will oversee the dig with an aim to get the local community and history group involved in their history and hopefully learn something along the way.
Lastingham Beck Management
To carry out tree management work along the beck to improve the appearance of the village, along with restoration works to St Chads Well and restoration of a section of dry stone walling as an enhancement to this popular walkers village.
Sinnington Maypole
The restoration of the maypole as an enhancement to the village environment for the benefit of the community and visitors, and the erection of a small plaque explaining the history of the Maypole over the last 400 years.
Hutton Buscel Village Hall
The restoration of a pair of impressive listed gate piers to enable the reinstatement of gates at the entrance of the village hall. By carrying out this work it will enable better and safer usage of the village hall which is used daily by the local playgroup, as well as an enhancement of the village environment.
Levisham Flagpole
Reinstatement of the village flagpole as the centre piece of celbrations around the Diamond Jubilee, as well as commemorating other national events and celebrations in the future. There has been a flagpole in Levisham since at least the 1950's.
The Hulleys
A programme of archaeological surveying, comprising topographical earthwork survey and geophysical magnetometer survey, of several areas at The Hulleys Cloughton, to record recently idenified archaeological sites.
Wass Environment Day
Provision of a weekend of events (27 - 29 April 2012) focussing around the natural history of the village, including walks, talks and exhibits.
Lockton Village Projects
Restoration of the listed Pinfold to provide better usage of the space, including planting and better surface treatment. Work also includes the restoration of the listed village Well and the provision of a circular bench around the Lime Tree on the village green.
West Ayton Wildflower Project
Members of the Parish Council have prepared a project of planting wildflower plants in the village. Two sites were identified, one being in a woodland setting and the other a wetland setting near the Weir. They were advised by a local expert and farmer and overall the project aims to bring wildlfowers closer to the community.
Tallest Man in the World Musical
The schools of Osmotherley and Swainby have taken part in an oral history project, taking a local tale of the Scugdale Giant and making it into a musical play. Each school presented their own versions of the tale.
Ravenscar Barrows
The local history group have involved a specialist surveyor to survey five barrow sites in order to gain a greater understanding of the areas historic assets. The information gathered will inform many interest parties such as the NYMNPA, Rotunda Museum, Whitby Museum and other local history groups.
St Josephs, Loftus History Project
Following on from the restoration of Handale Abbey Walled Garden, the local school are getting involved in the creation and manufacturing of a gate based on the local tales and stories of the site.
Trod Restoration
The farms of Plum Tree House, Roxby and Sunnyside, Fylingdales have seen the restoration of trod pathways. In particular at Sunnyside, the trod still forms the main pedestrian route to Fyling Hall School and as a public footpath allows walkers to enjoy the fantastic views of Robin Hood's Bay.
Ride Yorkshire
Assistance was provided to the Ride Yorkshire Group to help promote the horse riding trails in the North York Moors area.
Rosedale Conservation Area
An historic section of the churchyard has been made available to create a conservation area of wildflowers and haymeadow flowers. The area was the burial site for the many miners who lost their lives working down the mines. Seed was sourced from local fields in order to try an improve habitat links through the Dale.
Pinchinthorpe Hall Moat Restoration
In order to further the work on the historic moat, the resintatement of the sluice gates was needed in order to regulate water levels within the moat. The project also sought the removal of invasive plant species as well as the provision of an interpretation board to further the understanding of the site.
Hutton le Hole Memorial Garden
The creation of a memorial garden to the rear of St Chads Church, utilising and improving previously unused land to create a tranquil area for people to enjoy. The work also involved the planting of wildflowers, bird boxes and bug boxes in order to enhance the biodiversity of the area.
Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby
The unearthing and restoration of a section of old trod in Ugglebarnby and the installation of a traditional finger post enhacing the appearance of the village.
Osmotherley Pinfold
Using local contractors and traditional building techniques this historic feature was restored. A small plaque will be erected at the site explaining its history for walkers and passers-by.
Roxby Heritage
Little is left of the old manor which once stood on the hillside at Roxby and therefore a scheme of consolidation is proposed as well as a possible geophysical site survey in order to form an information panel to be placed close to the site.
NYM Honeybee Conservation
30 beehives were purchased to offer to beginners and members as part of a series to create small nucleus breeding colonies to help prevent non-local bees being brought into the area, destroying the vital work been carried out resist viruses.
Jugger Howe Nature Trail
As part of the wider management of Fylingdales Moor, the Hawk & Owl Trust along with the Environment Agency looked to create a nature trail to increase awareness and appreciation of the moor and its biodiversity. Track improvements were needed and the work was carried out using volunteers.
Gateway Website
The Gateway group is a local group looking to promote greater usage, awareness and appreciation of the countryside in and around Whitby. The development of a website will allow them to further their aims and provide information access, environmental and conservation initiatives, news, activities and volunteering opportinities.
Pockley Church Victorian Heating System
This project provided funding to reinstate the original hypocaust heating system siting a multifuel burner underneath the church floor. A minature train track will also be reinstated to deliver fuel to the stove via an arched tunnel, avoiding the need to carry logs and coal through the main doors.
Bilsdale Arts & Crafts Heritage Project
The Chop Gate school children together with the help of volunteers from the community will design six mosaic panels to be set on the external walls of the village hall, along with a weatherproof 12 page booklet telling the storey of the village of the past 60 years, and a childs view of the next 60 years.
Staintondale Local History Group
The Group were looking to digitally record their archived collections with an aim to organise and add to the information making it more redily accessible for both the local people and tourists.
NE Geology Trust
The purchasing of costumes to allow the group to deliver their Victorian Geologist Show, attending local schools and events telling the storey of our historic geologists.
Lythe Village Hall
The purchasing of outdoor seating area to increase the capacity of this busy local amenity building and utilise an area of unused land, bringing it back into community use.
Hutton Buscel 900
In 2011 the village celebrated being 900 years old (1111 - 2011) and to commemorate this milestone in history the Parish Council co-ordinated a weekend of celebrations, including a time capsule and plaque to commemeorate this event. The time capsule would remain unopened until the village can celebrate its millenium in 100 years time.
Coastal Forum Panels
The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Coastal Forum is an integrated management organisation made up of volunteers from various different bodies with an interest in the management of the local coastline. Six indoor panels were funded to promote the work and awareness of the Forum and the benefits it provides to the local communities.
School Wildlife Project
Parenets, Govenors, Staff, Pupils and the wider communities of Chop Gate abd Carlton & faceby Schools have started the creation of garden and wildlife areas. Equipment was purchased to encourage the pupils to grow their own veg (for school dinners), plant and grow shrubs to attract butterflies and bees, bird tables and the enhancement of the small pond at Carlton School.
River Esk Anglers Monitoring Initiative
12 local residents from around the Esk took part in a biological monitoring programme to provide them with the skills and equipment neccessary to assess the health of the River Esk. A key outcome of this project is to equip the communities with the understanding of its ecological status and the resources to protect it.
Goathland Trod Restoration
The trods running across the village green in Goathland are an icon of this moorland village. However, over time stretches of trods have been either lost rhrough theft or simple poor management allowing the surrounding grass to engulf them. This project sought to unearth lost sections of trods in the centre of the village.
Chop Yat Iron Forge Folk Festival
A village event was held to celebrate the history, traditions and heritage of Chop Gate and the wider Bilsdale area. The festival provided a fun day for local residents and visitors and was well attended with an estimate of in excess of 1000 people.
St Oswald's Church Lythe, War Memorial
This project formed a central part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Church's rebuilding, involving the rededication of the memorial. The Archibishop of York attended the celebrations.
Sinnington Local History Group
The recently formed a local history group sought funding to provided equipment to get the group started such as display boards, projectors, projector screens enabling the Group to put on exhibitions and attend talks and shows. The equipment will also be made available to other groups within the parish.
A Walk up the Fields and Beyond, Great Ayton
The intention of the project is to refurbish the footpath into Cliff Woods, repairing old kissing gates and providing improved access.
Old Red Telephone Boxes
They are such an icon of our rural villages, that several villages have taken the opportunity to 'adopt' their old red telephone boxes in order to reinvent them as information points, mini libraries or community hubs to serve local residents, walkers and visitors.
Castleton Play Area
In order to improve usage of the play area they wanted to replace the existing kissing gate with a normal gate to allow better access by wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.
Coxwold Projects
A range of street enhancement work was required by the village to improve the village and those who use it. The work involved the erection of gates at the entrance to the old railway line to prohibit vehicular usage, new beehive bins and the erection of an information board highlighting local circular walks and places of interest.
Lastingham Railing Restoration
The railings provide an icon of the village, and over the years the timber has eroded, paint has peeled and in some areas the original posts and rails have been replaced with concrete immitations. A local contractor was employed to restore the railings. The local Highway Authority kindly provided the paint as a contribution to the work.
Spaunton Heritage Work
The restoration of two historic features of the village - the pinfold and the secluded Victoria's Cross including the erection of interpretation boards and a directional sign pointing towards the Cross for people to enjoy the splendid view over the moors.
St Johns Clock Restoration
When the local church clock stopped it was very much missed by the local community of Newton on Rawcliffe. Local residents carried out research on the clock and while donations had been received to help towards its maintenance more extensive repairs were needed and funding was provided for its full repair and restoration.
Hartoft Horse Trough
The reconstruction of a double stone horse trough, which is not only a unique feature but one of the oldest features of the Parish.
St. Hilda's Church, Bilsdale
The local school children got involved to design a new bench to be sited in the grounds of the church for locals and visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the area. Two new information boards we also made using local tradesmen.
Shandy Hall, Coxwold
This project sought to rebuild a section of dry stone walling along the quarry edge and the removal of the existing hawthorn hedge would help improve the footpath which runs alongside the road. The project also seeks to reinstate the gates to the Hall, thus enhancing the streetscene.
Farndale Band Room
The reinstatement of a pair of traditionally made doors to help the community maintain their well used band room for future years.
Newton on Rawcliffe Village Hall Windows
The Village Hall is a period building within the centre of the village and is still being used as a community building in the same way as it was originally designed for. The Scheme funded the 'conservation gap' between the cost of uPVC and timber replacements as an enhancement of a community asset and historical building.
Kildale Information Boards
This project looked to raise awareness and appreciation of the heritage of the village by the erection of two interpretation boards, one at the station and one outside the post office. In addition to these, another small board is to be erected at Warren Moor Mine informing walkers of the failed ironstone mine.
Name Plate Restoration
These traditional style name plates form an important feature of a village and helps improve its appearance and encourages a sense of pride amongst local residents. Rosedale Abbey, Thorgill, Gillamoor, Ingleby Greenhow, Battersby and Battersby Junction, Old Byland, Suffield, Hackness, Broxa and Aislaby.
Battersby Recreation Ground
The community acquired an area of land in the village for use by the whole community. The area formed part of the old railway site and therefore required a contaminated land survey to ensure the land was safe. By providing this survey the community are able develop the site further into a play area.
Old St. Stephens Church
Assistance towards the provision of notice boards, pamphlets promoting the Church and other places of interest, posters and web presence.
Bilsdale Show
A small traditional agricultural show which, as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, was looking to host different attractions to help promote agriculture, rural life and local produce. By purchasing three marquees to hold the additional events they are also available for other community events.
Rosedale Village Pond Restoration
The pond forms part of what would have been the old mill race, and is now the only surviving element of this historic structure. The Scheme by providing a professional report outlining the remedial work needed to reinstate the water flow to the pond as well as creating a furture management plan for its maintenance.
Archive Open Door Project
The Fylingdales local history group wanted to better preserve and make more readily available their archived historic collection for the public, making the information more accessible.
Hall Cottage Wall Restoration, Levisham
Restoration of large and historic wall in the centre of the Conservation Area.
Thirlby Village Projects
Selection of projects which cumulatively enhance the village environment and local heritage. The elements consisted of purchasing of IT equipment to help develop the local history group, a new village name sign manufactured in the traditional style and new railings to the village hall where a disabled access had been installed.
Fylingthorpe Football Team
In order to help create a village and junior football team, the Scheme purchased a 'starter pack' (posts, line markers, flags, nets etc) to get the team up and running. There was great support from the local community, the Parish Council, the cricket club and local businesses.The club have since joined the local football league.
Appleton le Moors History Group
In order to increase the capability of the Group to promote its objectives of preserving heritage and engaging the local community permanent and portable display units were required to showcase their work. The Group also aims to provide a booklet and information panel to widen the awareness of both the Group and the areas heritage.
Rosedale History Society
Provision of IT equipment and display cases to allow the group to better promote themselves, with an aim to take part in English Heritage's Heritage Open Days.
Hinderwell War Memorial
Renovation of the war memorial consisting of re-painting the iron railings, repairs to the clock and planting the tubs. Help with carrying out the work was done by the East Cleveland Youth Housing Trust.
Esk Moors Active
Esk Moors Active is a local communtiy scheme providing a community minibus for the older residents of the Upper Esk Valley. By providing an electro-hydraulic charilift wheelchair bound users were able to take part in community activities and renew their acquaintances with the wider residents of the Upper Esk Valley.
Robin Hood's Bay Museum
Provision of hand-made signs to direct visitors and tourists into the Museum, and improved and modernised display lighting to improve the visitor experience. Improvements were also made to the collection in order to gain museum accreditation.
Rosedale Railway 150
2011 saw the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Rosedale Railway running from Battersby to Rosedale. The local history group wanted to celebrate this event by producing a Heritage Trail mapping the route of the railway. The Scheme assisted with the publication of the trail which sat alongside other events being held to mark the occasion.
Egton Mortuary Chapel
The Egton Mortuary Chapel is a small secluded chapel situated on the outskirts of the village. The local community wanted to erect a plaque to celebrate its history to inform visitors and walkers passing by the site.
Esk Moor @ Abbeyfield
The purchasing of projector and sound equipment to improve the facilities at the centre, allowing more events to be staged.
Robin Hood's Bay Street Enhancements
Robin Hood's Bay is a traditional fishing village which is an extremely popular tourist attraction. This project saw the replacement of the concrete slabbed pavements with traditional York stone flags and the repair of the characterful cobbled areas along the narrow and winding streets in the Bay.
Lastingham War Memorial
Provision of a new stone epitaph which was well eroded and beyond repair and restoration.
Hawnby Church Path Restoration
Follwing the 2005 floods, the path leading through the churchyard was in poor condition. Assistance was provided to upgrade the path to help increase the usage of the church.
Lastingham Village Boards
Due to the sporadic nature of Lastingham Parish the village notice boards provide an important service to its residents. The two existing notice boards were in extreemely poor condition and unfit for purpose. The Scheme assisted in providing two improved notice boards to achieve a more acceptable standard of village amenities.
Gillamoor Playing Fields
Facilities at the playing field are slowly being improved with modern play equipment and an all year round tennis court which is increasing the usage of the field by locals. The provision of a new cricket practice net for use by club members and the younger members of Gillamoor and Fadmoor was considered a perfect addition.
Ampleforth Water Pump
This project sought to help repair the cracked lid to an historic water pump within the centre of the village, which is also a designated Conservation Area. This last remaining water pump was a small, but important feature of the village, and with expertise of a local contractor.
The Doorways Project
This project helped the communities of Easington and Charltons to start a small growing initiative, involving the manufacturing of 20 wooden containers for the community to grow vegetables, as part of their Village in Bloom scheme.
Bygones of Bilsdale
The Scheme assisted the Bilsdale community in putting together a 3 day exhibition of Bilsdale artefacts and memorabilia spanning the past 100 years to share with the wider community. This information will then be archived for future generations as well as making it widely accessible through the internet.
History Tree at Danby Moors Centre
Jointly with the North York Moors Association a plate was inserted into the stump of the old copper beech tree to depict certain events spanning the trees lifetime, coinciding with the relevant 'time ring' of the tree. This project provides a long term feature for may visitors, particularly children as part of their educational visit.
Kildale Tomb Chests
The Scheme helped assist the community in the restoration of 5 listed tomb chests in the churchyard of St. Cuthbert's Church. The work amounted to simple repairs using traditional building methods.
