Trees

Individual and small groups of trees make a vital contribution to the farmed landscape of the North York Moors National Park and trees can also have a very high amenity value where they contribute to the special character of our towns and villages.

Trees need special consideration to ensure they reach their full potential but it is important to ensure that they are properly looked after and replaced when the time comes to fell them.

The National Park Authority has a responsibility for protecting important trees and this is done in a number of ways:

  • through advice and support on tree management and replacement
  • through the planning system. Trees are often a consideration when development is proposed
  • through serving tree preservation orders where trees of special amenity value are threatened
  • through Conservation Area designation which legally protects trees. Most work is subject to a 6 week notification period to allow impact to be assessed and discussed

You can find out about more by visiting our Advice and Grants pages and our Tree and Hedgerow Regulation pages.
