Trees in conservation areas
With certain exceptions, anyone proposing to fell or cut back a tree in a Conservation Area is required to give 6 weeks notice in writing to the National Park Authority.
In general all tree work or felling of trees which are over 75mm diameter (when measured 1.5 metres above ground level) is subject to a 6 week notification period.
Trees are normally inspected within the notification period. The Authority places notifications on a public register which is held at the National Park Office. You can arrange to see it by telephoning Rachel Smith on 01439 770657. It is our intention to make the register available on this site in the near future.
Parish Councils are also notified of proposals.
If a tree is dead or dangerous, work may be carried out without permission. However, at least 5 days notice is still required unless the work is an emergency. It is still in an owner's interest to consult with the National Park Authority before carrying out emergency work on a tree in a Conservation Area because unauthorised work could result in prosecution. Felling licence requirements also apply.
