Visiting woodlands

Levisham

Many woods in the National Park are accessible on the rights of way network – just check an Ordnance Survey map to plan your journey. Remember, though, that most are privately owned and access away from the rights of way may not be encouraged.

Walkers Welcome LogoOpen access can, however, be enjoyed in many woods owned by a variety of landowners. Look on the Ordnance Survey Explorer maps for access land. Much of the Forestry Commission estate, National Trust Land, Woodland Trust or National Park Authority owned land are open to the public. In addition the Forestry Commission may have negotiated access with private landowners under a management agreement. Look for the ‘Walkers Welcome’ sign which will be displayed at public access points such as footpaths.

You could try the following:

  • Dalby, Cropton, Broxa, Sneaton, Kildale and Guisborough Forests. These are larger forests which are managed by the Forestry Commission. For more information you can visit the Forestry Commission website.
  • Newton Wood (at Roseberry Topping) or woodland at Bridestones off the Dalby Forest Drive managed by the National Trust. For more information you can visit the National Trust website
  • Woods at Scar and Castlebeck, Littlebeck, Cropton and Ingleby Greenhow managed by the Woodland Trust. For more information you can visit the Woodland Trust website.
  • Over 100 hectares of woodland at Levisham Estate or woodland at Cawthorn Moor, owned by the North York Moors National Park Authority
