There are lots of exciting cycling and mountain bike events in the North York Moors area for all ages, whether you're a seasoned cyclist, a beginner looking to improve your skills or simply looking for a great family day out. If you like to combine mountain biking with trail running, take a look at Adventure racing events too.

Mountain biking/cyclo cross and gravel racing

10 February 2018 (6pm – 8pm) – Demo night light riding with Sutton Bank Bikes
Location: Sutton Bank 
Tried night riding before? W're celebrating the big open skies of the North York Moors this February half term with the Dark Skies Festival 2018, breathtaking by day and also by night when the dark sky panorama is revealed. Meeting at 6pm at Sutton Bank Bikes, £5 per person. 10 demo lights available. They'll show you how to work the lights and take you on a guided ride on the Green Route. Suitable for families and beginners, or cyclists new to night riding. If you decide to purchase a light on the night you'll receive 15% discount on any light.

13 February 2018 (6pm – 9pm) – Night Ride with Dalby Bike Barn and food at The Buck Inn
Location: Thornton le Dale 
A guided social ride with the Dalby Bike Barn crew from their new location in Thornton le Dale with food afterwards at The Buck Inn to celebrate the Dark Skies Festival 2018. Enjoy the breathtaking dark sky panorama. Meet at the shop at 6pm for a 1.5-2 hour ride with food after at The Buck Inn. The ride itself is free, food is £5 per person. Demo Lights also available.

15 February 2018 (6pm – 9pm) – Demo night light riding with Sutton Bank Bikes
Location: Sutton Bank

22 February 2018 (6pm – 9pm) – Night Ride
Location: Yorkshire Cycle Hub, Fryupdale
Enjoy a dark skies social ride from Yorkshire Cycle Hub with food afterwards and an opportunity to view the North York Moors' dark skies in all their splendour during the ride and from the outside seating area at the Hub. The ride is free but if you’d like a hearty bowl of something hot afterwards, it will be available on a pre-paid basis at £5pp. Part of our Dark Skies Festival 2018.

24 February 2018 – Yorkshire True Grit Dark Skies
Location: Newburgh Priory, near Coxwold
Yorkshire True Grit just got tougher! Dark Skies takes gravel biking and cross-country mountain biking to a whole new level – are you tough enough? Take part in an off-road cycling challenge event like no other! Combining the toughness of Yorkshire True Grit with the dark skies of night, this event will really test you and bike to the limit. Suitable for gravel bikes or cross-country mountain bikes, this night-time event will see you departing the stunning grounds of Newburgh Priory to travel 50 Yorkshire True Grit miles through forests, across open moorland and private land. As the sun begins to set, and the moon begins to rise, Yorkshire True Grit Dark Skies will start, you’ll cycle under the huge skies of the North York Moors and, if it’s clear, enjoy the views of thousands and thousands of stars and constellations above. Part of our Dark Skies Festival 2018.

15 April 2018 - Moors and Shores
Location: From Dalby Forest with a choice of 2 routes (46 and 60 miles)
Returning for the fifth time to Dalby, the Adventure Cross series is an event discipline for cyclists with both road, off road tracks, trails bridleways & lanes designed to be ridden with knobbly tyres (cyclo cross, hybrid or mountain bike). It's great for anyone wanting a less technical route, on /off road ride, on a cyclocross or hard tail mountain bike.

19 – 20 May 2018 - Boltby Bash Enduro and MTB Sportive FULLY BOOKED
Location: Boltby Forest, team or individual event, plus sportive option).
For gravity and MTB enthusiasts, the Enduro event involves 5 timed stages on private land. Enter in teams of up to 4 people or be an ‘island’ and challenge yourself, it even includes a category for electric bikes. The Boltby Bash Sportive, a non-competitive loop will run after the Enduro or join the practice day on the Saturday. Live music, bar and food on Saturday evening plus camping.

23 – 24 June 2018 - Yorkshire True Grit (gravel grinding event)
Location: This off-road endurance adventure challenge across the North York Moors uses gravel tracks and trails with a choice of three routes 20, 40 or 60 miles. There'll be classes for gravel, mountain, singlespeed, fat and electric bikes. Starting from High Paradise Farm near Boltby, camping will be available too.

10 - 12 August 2018 The Crossing (Rat Race)
Sample some of the UK’s finest mountain biking on this coast-to-coast 200 mile mountain bike ride on fully way-marked tracks, taking in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

2 September 2018 – Sportive X
Location: From Guisborough into the National Park
An off road sportive organised by Velo 29 suitable for Cyclo Cross, Gravel and Mountain Bikes. A loop of 100.7km with a split between on and off-road is approximately 50/50, taking you down quiet roads that would normally be dead ends!

15 – 16 September 2018 - Ard Moors Enduro
Location: From Lord Stones County Park
From the organisers of 'Ard Rock in the Yorkshire Dales, an Enduro with timed downhill stages on the North York Moors with steep trails, flat out singletrack and a proper 'Ard adventure!

21 October 2018 – Top of the Rock Gravel Sportive
Location: From Sutton Bank National Park Centre
Starting 1000ft up on the spectacular Sutton Bank escarpment, take a grand tour across moor ‘n dale on gravel trails.
Choice of three routes: Short: 27k (17 miles), Medium: 36k (22 miles) or Long: 60k (37 Miles).  
Expect spectacular autumn colours, a relaxed and fun vibe with smooth and flowing to technically and physically challenging trails, as well as a beer tent at the end!

15 April 2018 - Daffodils Sportive
Location: Thirsk across the North York Moors to see Farndale's famous daffodils, with a choice of three routes (35.6, 77.4 and 88 miles)

29 April 2018 - York Rally Dunnie Sportive 2018
Location: York and out into the National Park with three routes to choose from (63, 83 and 87 miles) and up to 1,687m of climbing.

27 May 2018 - Yorkshire Beast
Location: The ultimate challenge, tackling both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors over 200 Miles and with 5,000m of climbing, taking in some of our greatest climbs including, Boltby Bank, Glaisdale Horror (Caper Hill), Rosedale Chimney Bank.

23 June 2018 - Coast to Coast in a Day
Location: Seascale to Whitby via Great Broughton, Kildale, Esk Valley. This annual event is very popular and you are advised to book a year in advance. Booking opens on 25 July 2017 for 2018 entries.

8 July 2018 - Struggle the Moors Sportive
Location: Starting from Ampleforth, face 110 challenging miles taking in all of the National Park's iconic climbs, Boltby Bank, Carlton Bank, Cote de Grosmont, Glaisdale Horror (Caper Hill) and the infamous Rosedale Chimney Bank.

14 July 2018 - Stockton Sportive
Location: Stockton with a choice of four routes, from the fairly flat Spin (37 miles) for the first time Sportive rider, through to the Tour de Moor at 106 miles, with over 11,000ft of climbing. Part of Stockton Cycling Festival .

29 July 2018 - Ryedale Rumble
2018 sees the welcome return of this popular sportive, with steep climbs, fast descents and stunning scenery around the National Park. With three routes – extreme (169.9km), challenging (120.5km) and inspire (79.3km) – beginners and experienced riders will find something to suit. Enter online.

5 August 2018 - Ladies Only Charity Sportive
Location: Carlton Lodge Activity Centre, near Thirsk (start and finish), with a choice of three routes (30, 60 and 100 miles) heading into the National Park on the medium and long routes, with a few hills thrown in. Book online.

11 August 2018 - Whitby Regatta Sportive
Location: Whitby with three hilly routes to choose from (31.9, 58 and 78.5 miles) and up to 9,000ft of climbing.

Location: Nunthorpe across the North York Moors with a choice of three routes (30, 60.5 and 77 miles)

7 October 2018 - Ay Up! Yorkshire Sportive
Location: Thirsk. Part of the popular Wiggle Super Series, with three routes taking you around the North York Moors National Park with a number of testing hills (32, 56 and 93 miles). Book online.

Cycling festivals and spectator events

21-22 April 2018 - HSBC UK National Cross Country Series (Round two)
Location: Dalby Forest
Round two of five races, the British Cycling National Cross Country MTB Series returns to Dalby Forest and features races from fun to elite.

29 April 2018 - Klondike Grand Prix
Location: East Cleveland
Round one of the HSBC UK Spring Cup Series featuring top-level domestic road racing. It will see the country’s best riders and teams battle for individual and team glory around East Cleveland, including a loop around parts of the North York Moors National Park. The race will include rolling road closures and closed road circuits in Saltburn and Guisborough.

3-6 May 2018 - Tour de Yorkshire
The North York Moors is made for cycling and the Tour de Yorkshire will challenge riders as they pass through our rich tapestry of landscapes, from dale and market town, to forest and coast on Day 3 of this four day race, including the testing climb up the iconic Sutton Bank.Hosted by Amaury Sport Organisation and Welcome to Yorkshire, and supported by British Cycling, the Tour de Yorkshire is a 2.1 UCI Europe Tour Event, guaranteeing participation of some of the world’s leading cyclists.

13-15 July 2018 - Stockton Cycling Festival
Enjoy a full weekend of cycling with events for all the family and a celebration of all things cycling! Watch the Elite Criterium, Stockton Grand Prix, part of the British Cycling HSBC UK Grand Prix Series, or enter the Ride Stockton event, a family ride on a closed circuit and the Stockton Sportive, which includes parts of the North York Moors National Park.

Ryedale Grand Prix Weekend (2018 event details tbc)
Location: Ampleforth College
Including HSBC UK National Women's Road Series and HSBC UK Grand Prix Series.

Scarborough Festival of Cycling (2018 event details tbc)
A packed weekend including closed circuit road and grass track racing, sportive, BMX and "come and try" events. Located at various venues including Oliver's Mount and Hairy Bob's Skate Park.
