Five places to shop for hygge
Hygge isn’t just for winter. It’s easy to incorporate hygge into your life in spring and summer; think picnics, barbeques, walks and bike rides. And guest blogger Clare Gogerty knows just the places to head to for gifts to make our homes feel fresher and brighter.
1. Lilliandaph, Saltburn by the Sea
Christina Easton, owner of this store selling carefully-curated homeware, thinks that your home should ‘welcome you with a big warm hug’. To enable this satisfactory state of affairs, she stocks the covetable work of artist makers, many from the north east, including ceramics, cushions, throws and candles. All the necessities to make a home snug as can be.
2. Berties of Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay
Opened in 2016, this small but beautifully put together shop sells quality products for interiors, including their own range of handmade candles. With fragrances that evoke childhood seaside holidays, summer fruits and freshly cut meadows, they are the ones to light on dark winter’s evenings when you need to dream of summer.
3. Betsy and Bo, Staithes
This double-fronted store on Staithes High Street is a candy-lover’s dream. In the traditional glass cabinet are exquisite handmade small-batch individual chocolates and award-winning bars. On the shelves and in the jars are gobstoppers, flying saucers and liquorice. Impossible to leave without a pocket full of sugary treats.
4. Wild Hart, Sandsend
All manner of soft toys, including the floppy and appealing cloth Maileg rabbits, to take home and cuddle. The shop on the edge of the Mulgrave Estate near the bridge, also brims with ‘country-style’ gifts, vintage items and a fine selection of cards.
5. Craft at Cleveland Corner, Staithes
Head here to stock up for those evenings when all you want to do is stay in, keep warm and make something crafty.
Bundles of rainbow-coloured wools and yarns, many from local spinners, sit alongside a good range of crafting accessories.
Workshops in subjects including felting and sock-knitting are held in the room upstairs.
