Fresh eyes and a new perspective - two Somerset artists, Sara Dudman and Jenny Graham, showcase their creative response to the North York Moors and coast in work inspired by the land and environment.
Jenny Graham was trained as an artist in New York at the famous Cooper Union Art School. Following a 15-year career as a graphic designer, both in the US and back in England on her return, she became a full-time artist and, in 2000, completed an M.A. in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England in Bristol.
Jenny works in a variety of media, including oil, mixed media, printmaking, photography, assemblages and some collaborative film work. All her work is based on the environment, landscape, natural world and history. Jenny has recently begun to combine photographs with paint to create a combination image, and she loves to experiment with new processes, both in painting and in printmaking.

Sara Dudman trained in Fine Art at Loughborough College of Art and Design, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in 1987. She spent time working as a community artist and art teacher before undertaking an MA at De Montfort University in 1990.
Having taught art in schools and university until 2007, Sara has subsequently focused on her professional artistic practice and was elected an academician at the Royal West of England Academy of Art in 2015. She has also had work selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
Sara’s work is primarily painting and drawing based, often incorporating video as a source. She is predominantly concerned with interactions and interventions in the environment, and begins by spending time with her subject, collecting and interpreting visual information using a combination of video and traditional recording methods.
Back in the studio, these gestural works are created in layers, alternately recording and expressing the relationships and movements of the subject and its environment. The layering process can include ‘found’ surfaces and images which act as catalysts for the evolution of bodies of works.
Her current work – oil paintings of wheeling birds and water-based works on paper of butterflies – are derived from video recordings and form part of an ongoing series of works exploring the idea of ‘swarms’ of activity.
