Walks in the Esk Valley

The Esk Valley is one of the most beautiful and varied dales in the North York Moors.

The five downloadable walks help you delve beneath the landscape to uncover some of the hidden stories of the area. Explore Grosmont's industrial past, follow ancient routes across the moors, revel in the peace and tranqullity of Glaisdale and discover what makes the moorland tick. Whichever walk you choose, the story of this part of the National Park will fascinate and intrigue you.

The routes all start and finish at train stations on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Whitby and Middlesbrough. The walks vary from 2.75 to 9 miles (4.5 to 14.5 km) and the times suggested are generous - for people who prefer to amble rather than march. Three of the walks are circular and the remaining two are linear. To find out about train times either ring The Moors National Park Centre on 01439 772738 or contact traveline on 0871 200 22 33.

Sketch of HeatherImportant - Make sure you take waterproofs and wear strong footwear whenever you walk in the countryside, as paths can be muddy and the weather can change rapidly. Be careful about venturing onto the moorland in bad weather, especially when the mist is down.
