Where to see moorland

Moorland covers a third of the North York Moors National Park and since 28 May 2005 much of it has become Open Access land. This means that you can enjoy miles of spectacular moorland on foot. This is a wonderful opportunity but as it's home to wildlife and to sheep, it is important to act responsibly and take account of any restrictions.

Open Access land is marked on the Ordnance Survey maps OL 26 and 27 published in 2005. You can also find out where you can go and any restrictions from the Natural England

Please remember that the moorland is privately owned by farmers and landowners who manage the moorland for sheep and grouse. Open Access is on foot only, not for cyclists or horseriders except where there are special arrangements. Dogs are not allowed on most Open Access areas but they are welcome on public rights of way on a short lead. Cyclists and horseriders can explore the moorland on the many miles of bridleways that criss cross the moors.

If you visit our Online shop, you will find many booklets which guide you across moorland and explain the features you can see on route.
