Woodland
Woodland contributes a great deal to the landscape and wildlife value of the North York Moors National Park. Existing woodlands often need management to increase conservation benefit and free advice is available on both management and the grants available to support it.
New native woodland is encouraged in suitable areas of the National Park through Forestry Commission grants. Other grants are available to support the sustainable management of existing woodlands.
The benefits of planting new woodland include:
- Potential for stock shelter, timber or sporting use
- New fencing which can improve stock control
- Increase in the capital value of land and could contribute to farm diversification initiatives
- A use for unproductive or problem land such as bracken
- Farm Woodland Payments income (£60-£300/ha/yr)
