Yorkshire Cultural Strategy

The North York Moors National Park Authority is a signatory to and promoter of the Yorkshire Cultural Strategy and is represented on the North Yorkshire Cultural Officer Group, which has published a North Yorkshire Cultural Strategy entitled ‘Special Place, Special People’.

The North Yorkshire Cultural Strategy is a key document setting out the characteristics of cultural distinctiveness across the sub-region and identifying its importance in terms of generating economic activity.

The Strategy contains a detailed action plan where all North Yorkshire Local Authorities and arts, tourism and other cultural agencies have identified priority tasks to develop, improve and promote cultural activity to the benefit of the region as a whole and its citizens.

Key elements of the strategy include:

  • Removing barriers to participation in cultural activity
  • Providing cultural service activities and venues of the highest quality and opportunities for those at all levels of ability to take part
  • Strengthening the contribution of the cultural sector in North Yorkshire to sustainable economic growth
  • Maximising investments into the cultural sector and providing more effective and equitable distribution of resources
  • Promoting a county that recognises its cultural diversity and excels in the harmony between preserving traditional culture and developing new and exciting opportunities for cultural growth
  • Increasing cooperation and sharing of information and resources between cultural partners to agreed common goals.

The overall aim of the strategy is to give wider recognition to the important role culture has to play in North Yorkshire society and its economy and, at the same time, to build new investment in culture as part of the rural renaissance of the Yorkshire region.
