Mr C Massey

Dr C Massey

I have been an elected member at Redcar and Cleveland Council since 2011, at the time of my election I was the second-youngest councillor in the authority’s history. I have been a Cabinet Member, in the policy areas of environment and rural affairs, since April 2012. Outside of local government, I research nationalisation in politics, chiefly in the 1945-51 Labour Governments. I graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy in this subject in the summer of 2012 and have published work and presented conference papers on my thesis topic. I am an active walker across the Park and also a keen runner of distances up to half-marathon level. In my spare time I also run a local cricket club, Smith’s Dock CC, in Normanby.

I am passionate about the environment and look to take the knowledge I have garnered over the years into my role on the North York Moors National Park Authority. I am passionate about highlighting the Park’s special qualities to the general public, particularly in less advantageous areas. Moreover, as a new and (relatively) young member of the Authority I am keen to promote the Park to the next generation of visitors.

Favourite place(s) in the Park

Roseberry Topping is my favourite place to the North of the Park, within Redcar and Cleveland Council’s boundary and near to my home town of Eston. I have visited Roseberry Topping and the surrounding areas with my father since I was a child with it being in reasonable walking distance from my house heading over Eston Moor, outside the Park, towards Newton-Under-Roseberry.

Further afield, my favourite place in the Park is the area surrounding Clay Bank, for example the climb up Urra Moor – the highest hill in the Park from which there is an almost unparalleled view. Across the road I also enjoy the long walk up Hasty Bank, past the Wainstones, across Cold Moor and down Cringle Moor to the Lord Stones Cafe and Country Park, a hidden gem on the Western edge of the Park.
