Young Ranger Scheme
Our Young Ranger Scheme is open to young people between the ages of 11-17. Activities take place once a month in various locations around the National Park. Young people find themselves learning new skills through completing different conservation tasks such as footpath maintenance and habitat and wildlife surveys. There’s also the opportunity for learning new skills relating to navigation and safety on the hills.
How it works
12 sessions are programmed for each year and take place 1 day a month on a weekend, although additional sessions may be added for special events. The sessions usually start at 10:00am and finish by 3:00pm. Young people are required to bring their own drinks, snacks and lunch and need to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the forecasted weather (we can help out with wellies and waterproofs). Confirmation of attendance is required 5 days prior to each activity session by either email or through the Young Ranger’s facebook page. Examples of sessions from 2018 include: seal survey at Ravenscar, bushcraft, vegetation control and footpath drainage, tree ID and guard removal, map and navigation skills.
The sessions are managed by appropriately qualified and experienced National Park staff and volunteers.
