Youth Social Action
Young people make a huge difference in helping us to conserve the special qualities of the National Park. We actively engage with young people from both within and around the park by providing opportunities to take part in Youth Social Action. Whilst learning about this special place they are also developing valuable life skills and experience improved wellbeing. We have a number of ways in which individuals and groups can take part in practical action to make a positive difference.
Check out our Young Ranger page to learn how you can take part in monthly conservation tasks and skills sessions. Young Rangers is aimed at young people aged 11-17 years.
Spend a week with us on our Conservation Residential. This week is packed with tasks ranging from drystone walling, peat depth monitoring and footpath maintenance, interspaced with team challenges and night walks and activities. It’s a great way to be immersed in nature and to give it a helping hand. If you’re doing DofE it also counts as the Gold residential section. This residential is aimed at 16-25 year olds.
We can arrange Practical Ranger Task days. These are one off practical conservation tasks where groups of young people work on a task given by a Ranger and become a Ranger for the day. These days can be used to help uniformed groups work towards specific badges or awards. For schools we can arrange additional opportunities detailed on our Youth Engagement page.
Improved wellbeing and other outcomes of Youth Social Action.
Recent research carried out with our Young Rangers established that through taking part in Social Action they had increased their environmental awareness and responsibility whilst improving their self confidence and independence. It also brought benefits to their physical and mental wellbeing as well as improving their employability and prospects, thus preparing them for the world of work.
