Development of new HQ now well underway

Construction of the North York Moors National Park Authority's new headquarters in Helmsley is progressing rapidly, with work well underway on site. Recent weeks have seen significant milestones achieved, including the completion of foundations, installation of the main steel frame and staircase, and construction of the building's roof.

The new headquarters will provide a modern, accessible and energy-efficient base for staff, partners and visitors. The building's design is based on Passivhaus principles and will incorporate solar panels, high-performance insulation and glazing and charging infrastructure for both electric vehicles and bikes.

The development will also deliver wider benefits for the community, including improved landscaping to increase biodiversity and a new pedestrian link between Riccal Drive and Station Road. Staff vehicles will also be relocated from residential streets in the centre of Helmsley to purpose-built parking areas.

In June 2026, the National Park Authority announced completion of its new depot building, located close to the new HQ development at the other side of the English Heritage warehouse buildings. The previously derelict industrial building, known locally as the Old Print Works, has been extensively refurbished and redeveloped, with its aging asbestos roof and concrete cladding replaced and the overall footprint reduced in size. The new layout includes upgraded workshops, stores, vehicle garaging, a tree nursery and dedicated areas for washing and drying equipment.

Funding for the project is being met through a combination of capital investment made available to National Parks through Defra, together with the sale of Authority-owned property assets, including a former office on Bondgate (sold in 2022), premises on Sawmill Lane and, ultimately, the Old Vicarage in Helmsley.
