After nearly two centuries of service in a harsh moorland environment, Bridge 42 - on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) line between Grosmont Level Crossing and the tunnel - urgently needs major repairs to its stone and brick arch masonry.
We (NYMR) have just launched our Bridge 42 Appeal – a vital fundraising initiative to repair the bridge. The historic structure is one of over 30 vital bridges and culverts that carries trains and passengers every year through the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors.
Built in 1836 for the original Whitby & Pickering railway, Bridge 42 is celebrating its 180th anniversary in 2026. A Grade II listed structure, it links Goathland and Grosmont village and is the busiest bridge on the NYMR, with approximately 10,000 locomotive and train movements every year.
Detailed inspections have been carried out and show that significant structural work is required to ensure the bridge remains safe and fit for the future. Restoring it is a complex and costly engineering project that requires specialist materials, skilled contractors and careful working in a sensitive environment.
As a registered charity (#501388), the NYMR relies on the generosity of supporters to fund projects of this scale. Donations will directly support the repair and strengthening of the Bridge, helping to protect the long-term future of the railway, preserve an important piece of engineering heritage, and keep steam trains running through the North York Moors for generations to come.
The repair of Bridge 42 is vital for the future of the NYMR, and, as a complex project, is it a costly one which is why we are asking for generous support to ensure that we can continue running and secure the future of our much-loved railway. The NYMR is more than a tourist attraction – it is a vital heritage, economic, and community asset that boosts the regional economy, protects railway heritage, and supports local livelihoods. We hope you will support our future by donating to the Bridge 42 Appeal.

You can play a vital role in preserving the NYMR. The support ensures that the historic route remains open, operational, inspiring for future generations of families, volunteers and railway enthusiasts.
The NYMR is one of the UK’s most treasured assets. It connects communities, supports local businesses, provides education and volunteering opportunities, and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Once funding has been secured for Bridge 42, any remaining funds will support the NYMR’s wider programme of bridge and lineside care.
Please donate to the Bridge 42 Appeal today and help to keep the NYMR connected.
Many thanks for your support.
