Landmark legislation that led to the creation of National Parks in England and Wales was passed 75 years ago. Celebrate this momentous occasion here in the North York Moors!
The National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 was introduced to preserve and enhance these iconic landscapes for the enjoyment and wellbeing of all. It also secured open countryside access for everyone and led to the creation of National Landscapes (formerly Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
Discover the inspirational story behind this ground breaking piece of legislation — a tale of poets, rebellion and love for the great outdoors.
