A letter to our farmers and land managers

24 September 2025

The following correspondence has this week been emailed to farmers in the Whitby area for whom we have contact details. We don’t have contact details for everybody, and so we encourage you to share this information with any friends, family or neighbours that could also benefit from accessing this type of support.

The information was collated by the National Park Authority following a meeting convened by NFU Mutual, with representation from the Farming Community Network (FCN), Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), Yorkshire Agricultural Society and the Addington Fund.

Dear North York Moors farmer,

We take this opportunity to express again out heartfelt thanks to all the farmers and land managers who have freely given assistance to the Fire and Rescue Services from across the country to tackle the wildfire at Langdale Forest and Fylingdales Moor.

It’s still too early to assess the full extent of damage to the ecologically and archaeologically sensitive areas of land that have been affected, but as soon as we can, our team will be deployed to channel the resources and expertise we can mobilise to support the recovery effort.

More immediately we look to assist the farming community impacted on by the fire, working with other organisations who are also well placed to offer support, recognising the significant challenges faced by damage to fencing and other infrastructure, loss of stock, grazing and winter fodder supplies and well as the impact to mental and physical health.

This information sheet is intended to pull together the offers of grants and other support that are currently available to those affected by the fire, and we will keep you updated as more grants and support becomes available.

Support available

Amy's Just Giving Fund

Amy’s Just Giving Fund is now being administered with NFU and is available to farmers for assistance that may not be covered elsewhere. Please contact Claire Pybus at clare_pybus@nfumutual.co.uk

The North York Moors National Park Authority

The North York Moors National Park Authority delivers the ‘Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) Programme’, which provides capital funding to farmers and land managers for projects that deliver outcomes for ‘Climate, Nature, People and Place’. This programme can offer farmers grants towards the cost of replacing fire damaged fencing that is required for the management of livestock. Please contact Dave Arnott d.arnott@northyorkmoors.org.uk to find out more about FiPL funding.

The North York Moors National Park Authority can also seek to support you with issues/concerns you have with Agri-environment schemes agreements where you are unable to meet the obligations of your agreement as a result of the Langdale fire. Please make contact with Rebecca Thompson r.thompson@northyorkmoors.org.uk if you want to discuss this.

The Farming Community Network

The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a UK-wide voluntary organisation and charity that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in farming and ‘walk with’ people at times of difficulty and change. FCN has a wide network of volunteers, many of whom are involved in farming, or have close links with agriculture and therefore have a great understanding of the issues farm workers and farming families regularly face. FCN can be contacted on 03000111999 (7am-11pm, 365 days of the year) or via help@fcn.org.uk.

Addington Fund

Addington Fund’s primary focus is the welfare of livestock. They will consider one-off grants towards feed, fodder and other farm costs incurred as a direct result of the fire, where funding is not available elsewhere. Addington Fund can be contacted on T: 01926 620135  (option 3) or via their website www.addingtonfund.org.uk

RABI

RABI can provide financial, practical, and emotional support to people in the farming community through their confidential helpline 0800 1884444 or email help@rabi.org.uk While RABI does not help with payment of business bills, it can offer grants for domestic expenses to people of limited means who are in financial trouble because of exceptional events.

RABI work with BACP registered, farming-focused trained counsellors, to ensure that the farming community can access support quickly and without barriers. For anyone not yet ready to speak to someone in person, RABI’s online and text-based counselling service, Kooth, for young people aged 11 to 17, and Qwell, for those 18+, is also available 24/7.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) has an emergency fund set up through the Rural Support Network. YAS is also actively working to assist farmers and rural businesses, including running a live survey of its members to identify the help they most need, and offering small grants to complement other charities’ support or Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) funding for essential infrastructure such as fencing. Through the Yorkshire Food, Farming and Rural Network, YAS is focusing its next meeting on better understanding the aftermath of the wildfire and how the network can contribute to both short-term and longer-term recovery by inviting speakers from the North York Moors National Park, NFU, and YNYCA. These meetings regularly involve representation from DEFRA Rural and Farming teams, helping to ensure that key messages are amplified through these channels.
