Farm shops these days offer such a wide range of foodie goods that they're right up there with a decent deli. You'll be able to indulge in everything from rare breed meat, to freshly caught fish, delicious cheeses, seasonal vegetables and more.
Here's ten exceptional farm shops and delis you'll find on your travels, perfect for picking up your gourmet picnic fixings.
Farm shop based in Suffield on the eastern side of the National Park near Scarborough. Stock up on their home grown and pressed juices, cordials and cider made using fruit from their restored traditional orchard and vegetables from their no-dig market garden, less than a half a mile from the shop. They also stock other seasonal local organic fruit and vegetables, jams and chutneys, cakes and more.
Winner of FARMA Best on farm café/restaurant 2011. A well-stocked shop filled with great Yorkshire food as well as their home-reared Aberdeen Angus beef and lamb, and home grown asparagus (April-June). They're also a Pick your own fruit farm (June - August). Jump on their miniature train ‘The Flying Yorkshireman’ which will take you to the picking fields. Great children's play area and tearoom too, with a menu that reflects the seasonal produce, keep your eye out for their funky Vintage Yorkshire Afternoon Tea (pre-booking required).
3. Fowl Green Farm
A fantastic social enterprise based in Commondale in the heart of the National Park, providing training opportunities for adults with different disabilities. The farm shop sells their home reared highland cattle, lamb, pork and chicken, fruit and vegetables too.
Nestled in the south east corner of the National Park just north of Scarborough, this farm shop stocks homemade cakes, free range eggs, handmade pasta, ice cream, meat, pies and pasties, bread, local Whitby cheese and much more and perfectly complements their dog-friendly tea garden, it's well worth finding this lovely place.
A fantastic deli and speciality food store, with its Aladdin's Cave upstairs and where over 70% of its goods sourced from Yorkshire. Winner of the UK's Best Small Shops Competition 2015 too. Its takeaway sandwiches are legendary, make sure your appetite is up for it.
Idyllically situated at the top of Carlton Bank, complete with restaurant, café, farm shop and camping pods. With special Belted Galloway burgers and dry aged steaks and meat sourced from the owner’s farm on the doorstep, local produce is at the heart of the venture.
Only selling what they grow, so don't expect to find much in the hunger gap of May/early June, but the rest of the year, their range of vegetables is a rainbow of colours, with recipes to help you make the most of their unusual and tasty produce. They also supply Organic Food and Healthcare in Pickering, which has one of the widest selections of organic produce in Yorkshire including vegetables, fruit, meat and eggs.
Just outside Helmsley and run by farmer Mark Rooke, this multi-award winning farm shop sells beef, lamb and pork from the farm and smoked fish from nearby Yoadwath Mill Trout Farm. Sunday lunches are very popular in the Old Granary converted barn tearoom.
Excellent butcher's counter with meat and game from the Castle Howard Estate or within a 30 mile radius. The shops is well-stocked sourced from nearby producers, regional cheeses, artisan bread, home baking and English wines; finding your own spot to spread your foodie delights amongst the estate’s 1000 acres won’t be too difficult either!
Handily located on the Pickering to Malton road, with a well-stocked butchery and deli located in a converted cart shed on a traditional working farm.
