Safe cycling

Cycling by Tessa BunneyCycling by Tessa Bunney

It's common sense, but please make sure you and your bike are fit enough and fully equipped to enjoy cycling in the North York Moors.

For an up-to-date weather forecast, visit the Met Office website.

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Ensure that your bike is in good condition and that you have tools and spares
  • Wear and carry appropriate clothing, including wet-weather clothing – there's only limited shelter available in some parts of the countryside
  • Take plenty of drinks, food and snacks, especially on longer routes
  • Stick to legal routes. Note that in forests, routes may change due to tree felling and other operations. All route diversions will be clearly marked
  • Remember that forest roads are also used by vehicles. Keep away from forest operations and do not pass any vehicle loading timber until you have been told to do so
  • Take care on country lanes in particular, and consider others using the route, e.g. walkers and horse-riders
  • Please close gates
  • Expect the unexpected – keep your speed down

Respect: Share the Trail

This film, created by Forestry Commission Wales, shows how dangerous the trails can be if no consideration is given to horse riders by mountain bikers and demonstrates what to do to stay safe. Watch, enjoy and ride safely.
