The World of James Herriot

A must for anyone staying in North Yorkshire is a trip to the World of James Herriot. Visitors of all ages are welcome at the former home and surgery of the world's most famous vet. Based in Thirsk, it's not far from Sutton Bank National Park Centre where you can soak up Herriot's favourite view.

The World of James Herriot is open all year round, has plenty of exhibits you can touch and feel, and brings a lift to the man behind the books.

It's the place to be to appreciate the amazing journey of the vet turned author whose way of writing about the characters and experiences in his life captivated readers the world over.

Rooms set in the 1940s create a wonderful atmosphere of a bygone age. A film shown in the barn with supporting story-boards provides an insight into the man behind the books.

A TV studio from the 1980s captures the excitement of turning script to screen. And a unique collection of veterinary equipment through the ages make this the only museum of its kind in the UK.

With interactive displays and challenges for kids, this is a fun place to be, topped off by a shop selling plenty of mementos.

Accessibility

Access for wheelchair users with flat surfaces and a disabled lift between floors. Disabled toilets are also provided.

An audio guide system is available, obtainable at the time of admission.
