North York Moors Tourism Network

The North York Moors attracts millions of visitors each year who play an important part in the economy of the area. These visitors clearly have an impact on the lives of residents and the environment. Many local businesses rely upon these visitors for their livelihood.

We are supporting tourism businesses in and around the North York Moors National Park through a number of initiatives, including our Tourism Grant Schemes and through the North York Moors Tourism Network, which is managed on a voluntary basis by Susan Briggs, Director of The Tourism Network Ltd. The network is very informal, with no charge to join, and it's designed to benefit tourism businesses who wish to capitalise on their location in/near the North York Moors National Park and Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Why join?

  • You'll receive regular project updates including links to other sources of support and useful information
  • We arrange networking, marketing masterclasses and virtual events, which are either free or have a small charge to come along. Upcoming events are listed on the Network's website. These are usually held outside the main summer tourism season.
  • You'll be offered free access to our toolkit, copyright-free images, films, and other support tools.

We also organise collaborative marketing activities, such as the 2014 Lost Sheep in Pink Jerseys campaign, and will be developing other free/low cost resources going forward. We're careful not to duplicate activities of other organisations but to add value where we can.

Any tourism, hospitality, creative and retail business which wishes to benefit from increased visitor spending and is in/near the North York Moors National Park (including the coast from Saltburn to Cloughton/Scalby Mills) and Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is welcome to join. There's no charge. You don't need to be based within the National Park's boundary but businesses should be interested in working with us to promote the area's local distinctiveness and special qualities.

Sea Life, See Life

Members of the coastal arm of the North York Moors Tourism Network were the first to hear about, and feed into, the initiatives delivered as part of the project Sea Life, See Life, which showcased the natural, fishing, artistic and culinary heritage of villages between Saltburn and Cloughton. The project ran from April 2015 until December 2016.

Thanks to funding secured by the National Park Authority from the Coastal Communities Fund, various activities were delivered to attract new, more affluent visitors who want to learn and do something different, and to encourage more visitors to stay longer and spend more. The Coastal Communities Fund is funded by the Government, with income from the Crown Estate's marine assets. It is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of UK Government and the Devolved Administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Moors and More

The North York Moors and More project worked with businesses across the North York Moors National Park, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, large parts of Redcar and Cleveland, and the northern part of the Vale of Pickering. Its aim was to encourage visitors to stay longer, spend more and raise the profile of the area.

Over 12 months, between September 2012 and 2013, we worked with local tourism businesses and communities to identify, develop and promote aspects of this area which make it special and distinctive. We also helped businesses to create new tourism products and ways to increase visitor spending.

There were three key project stages:

  • Download a copy of the local distinctiveness toolkitWorkshops and research to identify the area's most distinctive features: what prominent and hidden aspects can we use to encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more?
  • Creation of a toolkit, how-to information, promotional resources, films and images for use by participating tourism, creative, food and drink and retail businesses
  • Development of a North York Moors Tourism Network, to make it easier for businesses to work together and direct support to help them create new products, packages and experiences to make tourism more profitable.

The various resources are still available to members of the North York Moors Tourism Network, an informal group which is free to join for businesses located in the wider North York Moors area. Find out more and join up here.

This project benefited from LEADER funding, made available through the Rural Development Programme for England, jointly funded by Defra and the European Union, matched with funds from the North York Moors National Park Authority.
