Ian Scott Massie was born in London in 1952 and grew up in Buckinghamshire, close to the childhood home of Paul Nash – an abiding influence in his work. He was further inspired by the vibrant work of his school art teacher, Romeo di Girolamo (current President of the Royal Society of British Artists), and began painting professionally while a student in Durham. Working first in oils and screen printing, his work progressed through acrylic ink and paint before he settled into the medium of watercolour.
Ian trained as a music teacher and holds a BEd and an MA, and continues to pursue a parallel career as a musician. He is a founder and events coordinator of the Masham Arts Festival and a founder of Artison arts and crafts teaching studios near Masham, where he lives. He was a semi-finalist in BBC’s Mastermind (2010), answering questions on Paul Nash. In 2012 he was a finalist for the Neo Print Prize and the Flourish Print Award.
Ian specialises in single themed exhibitions that have included The Buildings of York (Blake Gallery, York), Paintings of Fountains Abbey (Fountains Hall, near Ripon), From William’s Words (Rydal Mount, Ambleside) and Tales of the Dales (Wensley and Sedbergh). In addition, he exhibits at galleries throughout the UK and has work in print with major art publishers. The Masham Gallery is the principal outlet for his work.
His books of painting and poetry include Under a Northern Sky, Journeys, Tales of the Dales and Places of Pilgrimage. He has written for The Artist, Craftsman Magazine and Art Business Today and has been business columnist for Artists and Illustrators Magazine.
