Exploring the people, flora and fauna that inhabit the local landscape, Suzie Devey uses an array of printmaking techniques to reveal untold and unimaginable encounters. She plays with scale and proportion, and surprises us with microscopic elements encountered as large-scale linocut prints and detailed story scrolls depicting incongruous moments from everyday life.
Suzie Devey has been a freelance artist and printmaker for over 20 years. She creates large-scale printmaking projects that involve others, so they can undertake a journey of creative self-discovery with art as their tool. Her practise nourishes conversations and encounters that would otherwise not exist.
Suzie uses a combination of printmaking techniques and often incorporates fragments of ephemera as collage. Through a layering process she creates work that people relate to by remembering their own experiences of using such techniques as a child at school.
Suzie was awarded Arts Council funding to deliver printmaking workshops with asylum seekers and refugees across the Tees Valley, to explore the welcome they received. She has recently exhibited in Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
I am fascinated by printmaking as an art form because it can produce the most complex results by the most simple of applications.
I love to wander the hills, woodlands and lanes around my home at Chop Gate, but I am also a treasure hunter, which had led to amazing adventures, including travelling the world with Channel 4! As a code-breaker I frequently ‘hide things in plain sight’, so that messages and meaning are often contained within my work but are not always apparent.
