Moor to Sea

On behalf of the North York Moors Rural Coastal Community Team, we secured a Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) Round Four grant totalling £275,000 for the 'Moor to Sea: new activities and niches on the North York Moors Coast’ project. Running from September 2017 to March 2019, the project will endeavour to support at least 140 businesses and create 105 indirect jobs along the coastline between Saltburn and Cloughton.

The project's underlying purpose is to regenerate the area economically by encouraging visitors to stay longer and spend more. We also aim to raise awareness of the coastlines' National Park status and showcase just how special it is. The project is very near to completion now, here's a flavour of the activities we've covered:

  • Coastal ambles - downloadable maps for various stretches along the Cleveland Way National Trail to create more of an 'experience' to do, see, eat/drink and encourage stronger links between walking & cycling.
  • Smugglers Trail in Robin Hood's Bay highlighting physical clues to explore Baytown's secretive past.
  • Creating new packages for niche, high growth sectors. We've provided inspiration for dog owners wishing to bring their four-legged friends on holiday. Rail fanatics won't miss a thing with these handy must dos. Visitors who enjoy being on the water can enjoy our Fish and Ships recommendations.
  • An attractive and definitive list known as the Top 10 Iconic Coastal Experiences.
  • The Geocache Arts Trail is an activity for families, geocache enthusiasts and art lovers to have some fun exploring Sandsend and create a keepsake to take home.
  • Creation of the Look Out! Trail centred around our local explorer Captain Cook aiming to encourage exploration and discovery within the North York Moors.
  • Sea the Sheep campaign. A summer 2018 activity which invited primary schools, local communities and businesses to have some fun dressing up coastal themed sheep, all in aid of raising awareness of the coast and encouraging visitors to explore it.
  • We reinvigorated the Capital of Cake initiative with over 30 new businesses getting involved this year. Predominantly being a social media campaign, it self proclaims the area as Britain's Capital of Cake and ultimately the best place to come for sweet treats!
  • Previous successful publications have been updated like the Insiders' Guide to the North York Moors Coastline to take into account new businesses and experiences offered along the coast.
  • Various business support workshops via the North York Moors Tourism Network providing marketing support, social media advice and website improvement skills, to name a few.  

Capital spend has included a significant improvement to signage along the Cleveland Way and Cinder Track. Visitors along the well-trodden routes are now more aware of amenities close by which they wouldn't have otherwise considered diverting to. Other ways in which physical improvements have been made include landscaping Robin Hood's Bay Station car park to become more aesthetically pleasing to visitors and encourage wildlife. A relatively new movement known as '#2minute beach clean' encourages visitors to litter pick as they walk along our beaches. Project money has meant we have been able to equip Staithes, Runswick Bay and Whitby with their own boards which includea litter picker and bags to collect rubbish in.

Updates on the North York Moors Tourism Network outline themes and marketing areas we're working on and encourage local businesses to get involved collaboratively alongside the National Park to co-promote messages and share information with their visitors.

Round Three CCF saw us complete the delivery of the 'Sea Life, See Life' project, which showcased the natural, fishing, artistic and culinary heritage of villages such as Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay.

Funding

Funding for this project has been secured from CCF, which is funded by the Government, with income from the Crown Estate's marine assets. Unfortunately CCF does not accept applications where funding might have been used for onward distribution of funds - such as using it to run a community grants scheme or provide grants to local businesses.

Great British Coast logoThe Great British Coast has enormous economic potential and this government is determined to see it thrive all year round.

That’s why by 2020 we will have invested over £210million in seaside areas through a dedicated Coastal Communities Fund. Grants of up to £4million are available to projects which help in generating jobs and boosting businesses across our much loved seaside areas.

So far, analysis has shown that this has been money well spent with every £1 invested having the potential to create an up to £8 boost to our coastal economies. Find out more.
