There are lots of exciting cycling and mountain bike events in the North York Moors area for all ages, whether you're a seasoned cyclist, a beginner looking to improve your skills or simply looking for a great family day out. If you like to combine mountain biking with trail running, take a look at Adventure racing events too.

Mountain biking, cyclocross, gravel biking and enduro events

10 July - Top of the Moors Gravel Sportive
Location: Dalby Bike Barn, Thornton le Dale
This new sportive mixes a relaxed and fun ethos with the challenge of forest tracks, moorland singletrack and gravel. With a choice of three distances (35/55/85k), technical support, food and refreshment points

16 July, 29 October - Shredders and Rippers Kids Time Trial, Sutton Bank
Sutton Bank Bikes popular kids' events return for 2022, with five age groups split across the skills loop outside Sutton Bank Bikes shop for the Shredders (for balance bikes up to 8 year olds), plus the Rippers time trial on the pump track and cyclocross loop (for 8-12 year olds). Call Sutton Bank Bikes to sign on (01845 597759).

Please note the pump track and cyclocross loop will be closed to the public from 9am-12.30pm on 16 July and 29 October. A signed diversion will be in place showing how to access the wider network of trails (Fort/Paradise/Drovers).

21 July (evening) - Pump Track Challenge 
Location: Sutton Bank National Park Centre
New for 2022 organised by Sutton Bank Bikes on the pump track at Sutton Bank. Please note the pump track will be closed to the public from 6.30-8pm.

25 – 28 August - The Crossing (Rat Race)
Sample some of the UK’s finest mountain biking on this coast-to-coast 200 mile mountain bike ride on fully way-marked tracks, taking in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

10 – 11 September - Ard Moors Enduro and Sprint Enduro
Location: Lord Stones County Park
From the organisers of 'Ard Rock in the Yorkshire Dales, an Enduro with timed downhill stages on the North York Moors with steep trails, flat out singletrack and a proper 'Ard adventure! Keep your eye on when bookings open as it sells out very quickly!

25 September – Top of the Rock Gravel Sportive
Location: From Sutton Bank Bikes at Sutton Bank National Park Centre
Starting 1000ft up on the spectacular Sutton Bank escarpment, take a grand tour across moor ‘n dale on gravel trails.
Choice of three routes: Short: 25k (15.5 miles), Medium: 50k (31 miles) or Long: 75k (46.5 miles). Expect spectacular autumn colours, a relaxed and fun vibe with smooth and flowing to technically and physically challenging trails, as well as a beer tent at the end!

1 October - Dirty Duathlon
Location: Sutton Bank National Park Centre
An off-road sportive (run-bike-run) new for 2022 organised by Sutton Bank Bikes, with a six mile run, followed by a 13 mile off-road mountain bike ride and a second lap of the six mile run. Please note the pump track and cyclocross loop will be closed to the public during the event. 2 October – North York Moors Coastal Cycle Challenge
Location: Cinder Track (start Fylingdales Village Hall), 38 miles following the old railway path between Whitby and Scarborough (non-technical but may be rough in places). Ride for yourself or for charity.

5 November and 3 December - Double Cross Races
Location: Sutton Bank National Park Centre
New for 2022, a cyclocross series planned for winter organised by Sutton Bank Bikes, on the cyclocross course at Sutton Bank. More details to follow later in the year. Please note the pump track and cyclocross loop will be closed to the public from 9am-1pm. A signed diversion will be in place showing how to access the wider network of trails (Fort/Paradise/Drovers).

Road cycling events and sportives

2 – 6 June – All Points North
Starting and finishing in Sheffield, this is aimed at experienced endurance road riders and mapping enthusiasts. Riders are challenged with ticking off 10 checkpoints scattered across the north of England as quickly as possible. Depending on your route, expect to cover around 600 miles – checkpoints in this area for 2022 are Byland Abbey and Goathland.

5 June - The Yorkshire Corker
Starting at York St John University Sports Park, this charity ride has three routes, the longest heading into the North York Moors. Take your pick from The Stein (95.1 miles/152.8 km), The Full Pint (61.3 miles/98.6 km) or The Half Pint (29.3 Miles/47.4km). Enter here.

25 June - Yorkshire Beast
Location: The ultimate challenge, tackling both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors over 200 Miles and with 5,000m of climbing, taking in some of our greatest climbs including, Boltby Bank, Glaisdale Horror (Caper Hill), Rosedale Chimney Bank.

26 June - Fadmoor Sportive
A beginner level cycle sportive 26mile loop on quite roads round the North York Moors valley of Bransdale. Enter here.

3 July - Struggle Moors
Location: Ampleforth Abbey, taking hardy riders over the most iconic North York Moors climbs including Boltby Bank, Carlton Bank, Limber Hill, Glaisdale Horror and Rosedale Chimney. This sportive isn’t for the faint-hearted but with prior training and determination its achievable for any aspiring road cyclist.

9 July - Coast to Coast in a Day
Location: Seascale to Whitby via Great Broughton, Kildale, Esk Valley. This annual event is very popular and you are advised to book as early as possible.

2 July - Stockton Sportive
Location: Stockton with a choice of four routes, from the fairly flat Short (40 miles) for the first time Sportive rider, through to the Tour de Moor at 105.4 miles, with over 11,000ft of climbing.

24 September - White Horse Sportive
Location: Nunthorpe across the North York Moors with a choice of three routes (30.3, 60.4 and 76.8 miles)

Cycling festivals and spectator events

9-10 July - Scarborough Festival of Cycling
A packed weekend including closed circuit road and cyclocross racing, a "come and try" Hill Climb event, and new for 2022, a Go Mountain Fun Eliminator all at Oliver's Mount circuit.

21 August - The Ryedale Grasscrete Men’s and Women's Grand Prix
Location: Ampleforth College
Including round six of the Women's and round five of the Men's National Road Series

7 September - Tour of Britain - Day 4 Redcar to Helmsley
The North York Moors is made for cycling and the Tour of Britain will challenge riders as they pass through our rich tapestry of landscapes, from high moorland and market town, to forest, coast and dale on Day 4 of the eight day race, including two testing climbs, Carlton Bank and Newgate Bank. before finishing in the grounds of Duncombe Park. Hosted by SweetSpot, and supported by British Cycling, the Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bike race and a UCI ProSeries event, guaranteeing participation of some of the world’s leading cyclists.
